Morphotectonic Analysis of the East Manus Basin, Papua New Guinea

چکیده
Backarc basin systems are important sites of extension leading to crustal rupture where development typically occurs in rifting phases (or stages) with the final successful stages identified by formation spreading ridges and new oceanic crust. The East Manus Basin is a young (<1 Ma), active, rapidly backarc complex tectonic setting at confluence oblique convergence Australian Pacific plates. Here we undertake first comprehensive spatial-temporal morphotectonic description interpretation including link timing of, controls on, seafloor massive sulfide mineralization. Key datasets used analysis include multi-resolution multibeam echosounder data derivatives. Morphotectonic these defines three evolutionary for Basin. Each phase distinguished variation characteristics, volcano morphology structural features: Phase 1 period incipient existing arc crust intermediate silicic volcanism; 2 evolves effusive, flat top volcanoes fissures; 3 nascent organized half-graben system axial volcanism spreading. analysis, combined available age constraints, shows that can occur (within ?1 Myr) basins but different rift become abandoned preserved on as locus magmatism migrates focus ultimate zone(s) rupture. Consequently, occurrence significant Cu-rich mineralization be constrained transition from within Mineralizing hydrothermal have utilized interconnected zones developed during phases. Helium isotopic composition of hydrothermal fluids from the Manus back-arc Basin, Papua New Guinea
We present isotopic analysis of helium in hydrothermal fluids from the Manus back-arc basin, collected during the French-Japanese Manusflux and Manaute cruises in 1995 and 2000, respectively. The helium isotope composition of the fluids is comparable to that measured elsewhere in similar subduction environments, with 3He/4He values (7.4 to 7.9 Ra) slightly lower than typical MORB values, except...
متن کاملPopulation structure of Bathymodiolus manusensis, a deep-sea hydrothermal vent-dependent mussel from Manus Basin, Papua New Guinea
Deep-sea hydrothermal vents in the western Pacific are increasingly being assessed for their potential mineral wealth. To anticipate the potential impacts on biodiversity and connectivity among populations at these vents, environmental baselines need to be established. Bathymodiolus manusensis is a deep-sea mussel found in close association with hydrothermal vents in Manus Basin, Papua New Guin...
متن کاملThe anopheline fauna of Papua New Guinea.
Surveys for anopheline mosquitoes were conducted throughout the mainland of Papua New Guinea from 1992 to 1998 with the aim of mapping the distribution of the anopheline fauna. Larval collections, adult trap, and human landing collections indicated the presence of seven species (other than those belonging to the Anopheles punctulatus group); these were An. bancroftii, An. annulipes, An, karwari...
متن کاملDonovanosis in Papua New Guinea.
Clinical and epidemiological observations on 87 cases of donovanosis seen at Port Moresby General Hospital are presented, with detailed reports of three cases in which the disease was more severe. The circumstances of infection described were consistent with venereal transmission. Chloramphenicol and gentamicin were effective in curing the disease, while streptomycin was found to be ineffective...
متن کاملLeadership in Papua New Guinea
The unique context and challenges of leadership in Papua New Guinea are not adequately explained by the extant literature. This paper investigates the context of, and barriers to leadership, in Australia’s closest northern neighbour, as PNG attempts to actively participate in a dynamic, rapidly changing global environment. Historically, PNG is a diverse Nation of tribal societies organised on t...
